Ever wonder what consulting is? Or how I manage to be in 2-6 states per week🙃? Below I’m giving the skinny on my job, what keeps me coming back every day, and some of the challenges that I face.

A note about my weekly routine right now: Monday mornings I fly to either jersey or Florida or drive from WV to VA. When I land I get a rental car and drive to my client site where I work until Thursday. Then I leave around lunch time on Thursday and head back to the airport where I usually have to fly into IAD then Roanoke where Thomas picks me up and we drive and hour and a half to WV. On Friday’s I work from home! Then depending on where I have to be on Monday, I usually drive 4 hours back to DC on Sunday nights so I can fly out of DCA on Monday mornings And start everything over again!

What is Technology Consulting?

Consulting at Deloitte means:

-Helping clients solve problems that they do not know how to solve or do not have the resources to solve through leading technology practices and innovations.

-Bringing finance technology solutions to the CFO to enable and support his/her organization to report financial information to stockholders.

-Working collaboratively with teammates

-Being put in uncomfortable positions and stretch roles at a very early stage in my career

-Making it seem like I always know what I’m doing when sometimes I do not🤷🏼‍♀️

The hotel bathroom selfie because what else do you do when you’re on the road by yourself?

Consultant Benefits

-Hotel and Airline Points 🏆- yes we do get to keep all of the pints we accumulate which really helps when it comes to PTO time!

- Wellness Subsidy 🧘🏼‍♀️- Deloitte gives there employees a 50% match on all welness activities up to $500. Which includes things like half marathon entry fees, rockclimbing fees, and best of all MASSAGES 🥰

- Alt Travel ✈️- if you don’t want to go home you don’t have to! Every Thursday when I go home I can choose to fly anywhere else as long as it is a comparable price to my normal flight. And if it’s more, you just pay the difference! Works out really well for those that love to travel.

-Career growth and opportunity👩🏼‍💻- Deloitte is such a huge company the amount of things you can do is almost endless. In addition to career growth we also participate in initiatives which is sort of like “work after work” but can be really fun. For example, I work extensively with the NC State Recruiting team and Women’s Network!

- Expense Account 💳- no I do not pay for any of my own travel or food while I’m on the road and do have a lot of nice dinners. However this can also be a bit of a challenge at times (I’ll explain more below).

Challenges

-Never ( or almost never) sleeping in your own bed😴...yes hotels do get old.

- Expense Accounts 💳- they seem really great but having any food and beverage ( wine) at your disposal whenever you want it is a true test in self control. And honestly would love a home cooked meal 90% of the time I’m on the road.

-Feeling alienated and lonely even when your surrounded by a lot of people 👀. So much of my job is networking and interacting with people but 1) it can be emotionally draining to always feel like you have to be “on” and 2) theres often group events that have a ton of people but I don’t know any of them- talk about feeling out of place!

-Stress🥵 feelings of being overwhelmed are almost a weekly occurrence. Being mindful about work stressors and combatting them when possible is a daily balancing act.

-Airport/Travel Triggers🤬- need I say more? I think I will need to do an entire post on this one.

^looks really fun. Felt super lonely because I didn’t know anyone!
